The “Building with the Youth?” Working Group

At the start of the 2023 saison, Onda created three working groups—“Exploring experimental music,” “Sustainable living arts in 2043, experience of Design fiction,” and “Building with the Youth?”—to address the need, expressed by its partners during consultation days, to meet in small groups in spaces where they could exchange ideas, best practices, and new approaches to action.

The first season of the Youth working group was launched in 2023–2024, comprising 10 programmers and network leaders representing different types of projects: directors and youth programming managers from diverse geographic backgrounds.

Its goal was to collectively address the challenges, questions, and concerns currently facing the youth performing arts sector.

Following three working sessions, the group produced—in collaboration with Camille Jutant, a lecturer and researcher at the University of Lyon 2—a collective text summarizing the discussions and shared resources.

1 MAP AND 10 COMPASSES FOR NAVIGATION

The three levers for action identified during this first cycle are relationships, cultural rights, and hospitality. Building on these findings, the group then explored—during a second season spanning 2024 to 2026 and guided by Rachel Dufour, director of the theater company Les guêpes rouges-théâtre in Clermont-Ferrand—how to find a more equitable place for young people within artistic and cultural projects.

A document—comprising a map and 10 compasses—chronicles this journey and offers a framework for reflection and action to foster authentic, lasting, and transformative relationships WITH young people in the field of the performing arts.
